Small scale purification of water by ceramic filters

Chambrland filter
Katadyn filter
Many ceramic filters are used to water treatment. Some of them are: Pasteur Chambrland filter, Berkefeld filter and Katadyn filter. For each filter there some essential part for purification purpose, like ‘candle’ in Chamberland filter, infusoril earth (kieselgurh) and silver catalyst coating on Berkefeld and Katadyn filters respectively.

Berkefeld filter

In Katadyn filter there takes place “oligodynamic action” and helps to destroy bacteria coming to silver coating surface. These types of ceramic filters are often creating a hindrance to the bacterium and impurities on water but them passes viruses. So, they are not 100% safe for purification purpose. Also such type filter s is liable to sediment by bactiriae and impurities. Therefore filter candles should be cleaned by rubbing with any hard material and need to be boiled weekly. For cleaning purpose running water is more good than stagnant and use purified water for cleaning.  These types of ceramic filters are not suitable for Indian condition because our water contents are naturally filled with impurities like turbidity and high content of minerals, besides this, filters are not legible to destroy viruses. Although ceramic filters are effective for small scale purification.
